David Beckham, Professional Cartoonist
“”What would I like to do if I wasn’t a footballer? I love drawing cartoons and building Lego with my sons.
“This is going to make me sound really weird but when I was in Milan I had such a big amount of spare time. I found online that you can buy a Lego model of the Taj Mahal so I bought it and started building it, I only built some of it because I got injured halfway through.”
I read this transcript this morning, and actually guffawed, mostly because Becks admits that he injured himself playing with Lego, but also because there’s a persistent notion that drawing can’t possibly be real work, that the profession is within the grasp of anyone who can hold a pencil or drew Tippy from a copy of the Saturday Evening Post when they were 10.

Greetings,
I recently noticed your work on the Avengers stuff- really enjoy your style. I think it is reminiscent of Rick Leonardi’s earlier work (to me, he is one of the most solid- yet underrated artists out there). A deceptively clean/neat style- but compositionally complex, really tells the story. Anyway, only commented- because I think Beck’s was referring to his injury at AC Milan (torn achilles) while he was there- although a Lego injury does make the story that much better. Anyway, glad I stumbled across your site. Probably going to pick up Moving Pictures when I get a chance as well. I think I heard it was a collaborative effort between you and your wife? I’ve heard good things- I will do my part to support!
cheers,
Bradford

It’s all tongue-in-cheek re:Beckham; it is much funnier to think of him taken out by a brick of ABS. Still, I should be careful how I rant; Jim Dougan reminded me that I said the same things about Margaret Atwood a while ago.
Thanks for the support and kind comparisons.
