Been working a little on the site, now that my LAN appears to be running again. I’ve been quietly folding the various permanent pages into the WP database; I’ve realized that opening GoLive and my FTP client to make a few changes is hardly worth the effort, and occasionally doesn’t provide me with an accurate preview anyway.

So, faq.html is now faq.php– thrilling, I know. I also wrote a little PHP conditional script to change the sidebar information to correspond with the individual pages. It’s the kind of thing I like to know how to do. Back in the day when we learned BASIC on Commodore PETs, we had to write our own apps (and walk 10 km uphill both ways to school)– I wonder if that has had any effect on my generation of net users, or whether we mostly just forgot all that obsolete information. Steven Gettis has made fun of me on more than one occasion as a “hand-coder.” At least I never had to deal with punch cards.

Also, if you’re reading this via syndication, you won’t see the blog sidebar and might not know that you can keep track of my comings and goings through upcoming.org, and that I’ve implemented Technorati’s link count widget. It was starting to look a little cluttered, so I ditched the monthly archive in favour of WP’s calendar. Chris Mosby was nice enough to add this blog to the Comic Weblog Update feed, so I guess I’m not completely offensive.

Finally, thanks to those who cared to vote on my spam poll, I signed up for Akismet, so there’s no more moderation lag– comment at will.

Akismet is a delight. You’ll be amazed, it catches 99.9% of spam. Like Ivory soap, but completely different.
