Unpublished Nextwave
I just uncovered this self-edited panel from Nextwave (Issue 3? I guess) among some other scrap paper. Early in the series when I was still figuring out the “style”, I experienced some false starts and re-did a handful of pages (later on, who knows? Maybe I just stopped caring). Kathryn will assert, if only from the volume of eraser shavings, that the price I pay for my seat-of-the-pants working “method” is the occasional complete dead-end– I wonder if other people draw half a day and then have to start over? I never hear about it if they do.
Anyway, now, I’m not sure why I gave up on this panel– a couple of years later, it looks OK to me. This is also typical, however. I can’t abide looking at my own recently completed stuff, then after a cooling off period, it’s not entirely horrible. Finally, after about a decade, it’s junk again.

It looks awesome to me - I’ve been following your work since your Superman days, and among all the things that I love about your art, one that stands out to me the most is how well you can convey the illusion of movement in your drawings, which I think this panel exemplifies perfectly. I’m a huge fan of your work!
Best,
J.

It looks like you even (partially) inked it yourself? Working out some (internal) questions?
Damn fine drawing.
Nice to see some Nextwave…

Oh my, I really miss nextwave! By the way, while this panel it’s pretty cool, I think the final version you came up with (a much more closer angle, if I’m getting right where this one was meant to happen) is definitely better. Tic-Tic-Tic-BOOOM!

Thanks, all. Jay, that’s just an illusion due to the scanning process– it’s all pencil. As in, “work it out with a…”
